Leadership Retreat 2009
Jan. 31st
- Feb.7th

Dr. John Izzo along with Dr. Jeff
Vanderwielen will lead a group to one of the most spectacular places in
Central America - Costa Rica.
Known for
its beautiful scenery and hospitable culture, Costa Rica has created a
presence on the global stage and is one of Dr. Izzo's favorite places on
this wonderful planet. Costa Rica has worked to maintain its uniqueness and
charm amidst the past decade's rapid growth and change. Its natural beauty
provides a spectacular learning environment.
"We have a lot to learn from wild places. Sometimes we
need to experience these places in order to find a
better way in our own space"
- Dr. John Izzo
The Program
We will take you on journey to
explore three essential facets of sustainability in your life:
Sustaining your personal spirit and sense of purpose; sustaining
your leadership excellence and influence; and sustaining the
vitality of the communities and environments in the world around
you.
Sustaining Self
We begin the
journey by looking inward to ourselves with the aim of achieving clarity
on our personal spirit and purpose. To this end we seek answers to such
questions as, what gives my life a deep sense of purpose and meaning?
What must I do to stay true to myself? What is most sacred or important
to me? What kind of person do I want to be? What do I love doing? What
are my deepest values? How can I sustain a deep sense of purpose and
vitality in my life?
Sustaining Leadership Excellence & Influence
How
can we grow in our ability to influence others in both formal and
informal leadership roles? What is my leadership point of view? As a
leader, what are my frontiers of learning? How can I personally
increase my influence on others as a leader? As a leader, what is my
sphere of influence? What can I commit to doing to influence greater
sustainability among the individuals, organizations and communities in
my circle? How we sustain commitment from others?
Sustaining Communities & the
Environment
Here
we help you to rethink your business through the lens of sustainability:
Economy, Environment and Social Equity. How does my company add life and
vitality to the communities in which we operate? What is the economic
balance in my organization? How do we form community partnership with
important stakeholders? How can I leave a lasting legacy in my work and
organization?
The
retreat
follows a daily lifecycle with five central elements:
Morning Yoga
and hiking are available each day but not required.
Teaching. Each
morning Dr. Izzo will time dedicated to teaching. These sessions will
occur in a different and unique setting each day.
Personal
reflection. Providing time to synthesize what you learned, making
personal commitments, developing ideas to make a difference in your
circle of influence now and in the future.
Dialogue
with other attendees.
Experiencing
the Rain Forest via hiking, horseback riding, and rafting.
Additionally, we will visit the local community to see how the
principles of sustainability are working at the local level in this
region. On another day, we will experience a full-day trip up the
mountain to the head of the river for an amazing journey through the
rain forest in rafts.
'Wisdom is not a product of
schooling but of the lifelong attempt to acquire it.'
- Albert Einstein

Participants:
This retreat is
designed for a small group of leaders. There is space for18 individuals
who have an appreciation for new experiences, want to learn and grow
with the challenge and support of others. Most, if not all
individuals will have a working knowledge of Dr. Izzo's work. Most will
have read his writings, learned or participated in his Biography Channel
series or have listened to his audio recordings.
The Location:
Costa Rica is located in Central America between Nicaragua and Panama. The government is politically
very stable and has a high regard for the country's tourism industry.
The location where this retreat will take place is a luxury tent lodge and conservation project focused
on adverntours sustainable tourism. The lodge is nestled on 842 acres of
pristine jungle along the Savegre River. This jungle lodge, in our mind,
is a five star resort complete with a cacophony of natural music each
and every night.
Clothing:
Like
many people who visit warm climates, we find we often find we pack way
too much clothing! For this trip think comfort, heat and good foot
support, easy washing and fast drying. Keep that in mind you should pack
only what you need. We recommend using a medium sized back pack instead
of luggage and bring with you a day pack for day trips to store water,
camera, binoculars, extra socks etc.
Temperatures in January -February will be 74-92 degrees during daylight
hours and can dip to the mid 60s in the evening. Ensure that you have
one long sleeved sweater, not too heavy, but a sweater non the less will
keep cooler evenings comfortable. The sun rises in Costa Rica at around
5am and sets at 6pm year round, so prepare to wake with the birds and
enjoy illuminating sunsets over the forested mountains.
(What to pack is listed in the downloadable information at the
bottom of this page.)
Meals:
The
tent lodge along the Savegre River is a fully equipped lodge with the
most amazing dining room you will ever experience. Set right smack-dab
in the forest this dining room and bar are second to none. Complete
hearty meals along with appetizers are served on the theatrical deck as
cranes, lizards and monkeys entertain you. The full service bar is
complete with fine wines, your favorite tropical drinks and world class
beers that really taste great after a day hiking the forest.
